Surface inspection in the wood processing industry

A large wood panel manufacturer produces customer-specific parts in small series with different finishes and (uni)colors. Small breakouts, dimension and shape deviations must be avoided and are checked manually by operators.

Description case

Vision Partners has developed a customer-specific machine vision inspection system that can detect minute breakouts and dimensional deviations with 3 line-scan cameras and a laser.

This was a turn-key delivery where Vision Partners developed, installed and released the complete inspection machine.

Structure of turn-key delivery

2 color line-scan cameras are used to capture images of the top and bottom of the panels. First, the bar code on the panel is detected, read and used to extract product-specific characteristics from an overhead database. These characteristics such as color, finish and dimension are used for the various inspections.

To achieve accurate dimension measurement, a laser line is projected onto the plate using triangulation.

The laser line is aimed at the surface at an oblique angle. It penetrates the surfaces and creates a visible line. In areas where the object is lower, the beam is slightly displaced. Using a camera, this displacement of the bright laser lines in the image can be determined and, therefore, the height and dimension of the panel.

Principle of laser triangulation

The image below shows the operator main screen. The operator sees all important area and dimension parameters before the panel is further processed.

Inspection results are displayed on a screen and faults are logged for reporting and following up on any customer inquiries.

Thanks to this inspection, outbound inspection is standardized and delivered to the customer with consistent quality. A satisfied customer.

"We value the flexibility of Vision Partners. They can come up with something anywhere that can provide a quality-oriented solution. Every new department does need quality measurement and that can be delivered with vision."
