Surface control plastic film

A large manufacturer of films which is part of the Opackgroup produces films on a large scale for both the food and non-food industry. For the food industry, the films are also perforated in order to preserve fruit, for example. The perforation of these films is done via hotneedle, macro and laser perforation.

It is very important for the customer that in case of a disturbance in the process this perforation is controlled, measured and monitored for the operator. This so that in case of a calamity an immediate and automatic warning and/or machine stop is given and the operator has insight in the produced quality and possible deviations in the pattern.

Vision Partners proposed a Machine Vision System which can measure this perforation in-line even at high throughput speeds of up to 80 meters per minute. The size of the perforations in the foil is always between 0.5 - 1.0 mm and the foil width can vary between 80 - 160 cm.

The inspection of the film hereby consists of checking for the presence of sufficient perforated holes in the film and whether these holes are within the specified tolerances.

The advantage within this application was that deviations in the foil often have a repetitive character, so we could choose to use only 1 Area camera which transports via a linear along the width of the foil. Hereby the foil is continuously monitored over the full width of the foil with a high resolution and fitting within the budget because with this solution only 1 vision camera was needed.

"Because Vision Partners thought carefully with us, we were able to have a suitable Machine Vision solution installed together and within budget for this machine."

For this setup, Vision Partners also provided a control cabinet including a touch screen on which the operator can follow the progress of the control directly and in real time. This also graphically shows the quality of the produced roll after which a report is also automatically printed for quality assurance.
