Objectively determining color through a camera can be challenging. While the human eye can see colors relatively well, the results are subjective and there is considerable variation between individuals. Color perception from RGB cameras is significantly worse than the human eye, and accuracy is not enough the applications for many.
Vision Partners has developed a solution in the L * a * b color space which is commonly used for characterizing surface colors. Three sizes characterize the colors:
- thelightnessL* is derived from theluminanceof the surface
- the two parametersa *andb *express the deviation of the color from that of a gray surface of the same lightness.

With a hyperspectral camera (such as the Specim FX10), images were taken after which the color was determined with special software. The accuracy of this color measurement is much more accurate and reproducible than the human eye or an RGB camera.
This hyperspectral color measurement allows in-line accurate and reproducible measurement of product color.
