Label control cutting line

A large label manufacturer in Belgium for both the pharmaceutical and non-pharma industry wanted to have an automatic control on their cutting line for the colored labels on a transparent carrier. Since Vision Partners had also made the position control of the closing sticker on the TUC cookie packaging here in the past with smart vision cameras and at high speed, we were asked for the challenge again.

Because within this application it was about controlling the cut line, it was important to always detect these cut lines in a robust way. To this end, Vision Partners conducted a feasibility study in our own vision lab. Drunen to test which lighting technique was the best method for this. This showed that shear lighting just above the label was the right choice for robust detection of the cut line.

In order to check the position of the label between two cutting lines with the highest possible accuracy, it was also important to minimize distortion through the lens. A large working distance of > 50 cm between camera and label was chosen so that a lens with minimal distortion could be chosen because this lens is barely convex.

The application program has been calibrated and configured by Vision Partners so that as soon as the distance between two cutting lines is outside the known tolerance an alarm follows. Also if the colored sticker is not correctly centered between the 2 cut lines an alarm will follow. To check the progress, the operator can also read the current image with the measured values on the monitor connected directly to the camera at any time.

With this, Vision Partners again proved that unique and customer-specific solutions can be created even with standard products.
