In-line 3D height and width measurement

Our client is an international producer of pork and beef with locations in the Netherlands and Germany. Fresh pork is processed into semi-finished and finished products for domestic and foreign retailers. Fresh meat is manually measured and classified by height and width in the production line, which is a labor-intensive and error-prone process.
3d height width measurement
Description case

With the application of 3D Machine Vision camera technology, the dimension of the product can be quickly and accurately measured. The measurement takes place in-line at the end of the moving product line. Based on the measured width and height, the classification result is indicated with signal lights.

The challenge was technically solved by combining images from two Time of Flight (ToF) 3D cameras, which measure distance via the time it takes light to return. As a result, both sides of the moving product are visible. Below is the combined point-cloud visualization

Using 3D software, product characteristics such as width and height were determined. The final product classification takes place using a table in which the customer can specify the width and height criteria for each different product.

This automatic 3D classification machine is a great example where intensive cooperation with Vision Partners has led to a more efficient and robust product process.
