For multiple robot lines, Vision Partners implemented a solution consisting of Phoxi 3D scanners from Photoneo. This scanner is based on Structured Light 3D Vision technology and projects a series of parallel black-and-white patterns onto the scanning target.
When light projects onto the surface of the object, the patterns are distorted. The scanner's 3D camera captures these images and sends them to the 3D scanning software for processing. The scanner provides output in the form of precise point clouds for rapid location of any desired part.
Localization by high resolution 3D scan
After creating a higher resolution 3D scan, the 3D software first locates the selected products after which the object position and orientation (in 6-DOF) is sent to the robot. If desired, path planning and collision avoidance can also be determined by the software.
The implemented 3D scanner solution offers several advantages over a more traditional 2D camera for robot control:
- Higher accuracy: By using 3D image information, the robot can perform better position and orientation determination
- Robustness against ambient light: The proposed 3D camera/scanner uses projected patterns of light on an object to measure the distances between the object and the camera.
- Better depth detection: With a 3D camera, the robot can measure distances to objects in the environment more accurately than with a 2D camera.
- More efficient object recognition: A 3D camera can view an object from different angles and recognize it better than a 2D camera.
