Automatic pallet dimension inspection for robot control

The multi-camera 2D vision system measures each pallet and stack contour in real time, determines vertices and orientation, and sends accurate coordinates directly to the robot. In this way, the robot automatically corrects for variations, lines keep running and all measurements are traceable.

Vision system with multiple 2D cameras for accurate dimension control and robotic positioning

For an international manufacturer of sheet materials, Vision Partners developed a vision system with multiple high-resolution 2D cameras. The system automatically checks the dimensions of pallets and determines the vertices of the products to be stacked on the pallet. The dimension data is used to precisely position a robot for loading and handling.

The challenge

Variations in pallet size and placement caused cumulative stack alignment errors. Manual quality control offered too little speed and reproducibility. The customer therefore sought an automated measurement system that would provide real-time, accurate 3D positioning data to the robot so that the stacking process would be consistent and error-free

The solution

Multiple 2D cameras record the contours of the pallet and stacked products. The software automatically calculates the length, width, corner orientation and exact vertices of the stack. These coordinates are transmitted directly to the robot controller, allowing the robot to automatically adjust to any variation.

The result

  • Reliable robot loading and less downtime
  • Constant quality, day and night
  • Full traceability of measurements

The system runs completely inline and provides a stable basis for further automation of the production process.
