AI-assisted inspection for healthy curly tails

Within the pig farming industry, there is plenty of focus on keeping pigs with long tails. In the three-year EIP project ‘AI for a healthy curly tail,’ Vision Partners is developing a solution based on Vision AI to identify tail biting risks early and thus improve animal welfare.

Vision AI for greater animal welfare in pig farming

The challenge

Tail biting often results from stress and group behavior, but signals are difficult to spot in time. The industry was looking for a data-driven system that automatically detects abnormalities so livestock producers can intervene in a timely manner.

The solution

Vision Partners developed an automated inspection system at the slaughter line. Multiple high-resolution cameras record pigs' tails, then Vision AI algorithms recognize and classify damage into severity classes. This information is linked to pig ID at the slaughterhouse.

The result

  • Objective, reproducible recording of tail damage
  • Faster understanding of risk factors
  • Support in preventive management

“This Vision AI approach developed by Vision Partners gives us a more complete picture of the integrity of long tails in the slaughterhouse. This enables more targeted intervention.”
