Packaging machine vision inspection

Jeroen Keunen

Vision Partners looks back on a successful Empack in Jaarbeurs Utrecht. The well-attended booth demonstrated turn-key solutions for label control and seal inspection, which can be placed in new and in existing production lines (retro-fit).

"Our systems perform label and seal inspection tasks reliably without sacrificing throughput," Jeroen Keunen, General Manager of Vision Partners, told Empack. "Many customers are robotizing the packing line and are looking for in-line inspection systems that take over traditional packer tasks such as label checking and seal inspection."

For example, Vision Partners has the so-called Sealscout in its product range, developed for in-line inspection of sealed packaging. Jeroen Keunen: "Using an industrial thermal imaging camera, every sealed package is checked 100 percent in-line for thermal deviations of the seal seam. A thermal deviation is an indication that the seal does not meet the specified requirements." The Sealscout is easy to set up for different items and can be easily inserted into existing packaging lines, with tray sealers, thermoformers or seal bar, for example.

In addition, the Labelscout inspection system was demonstrated in which packaging features such as label, cap, lot code, bar codes or QR codes are checked for accuracy at high speed. Jeroen Keunen: "At the fair, we demonstrated our Labelscout label inspection solution where multiple cameras check the characteristics of the different labels of the packaging in parallel."

Both systems are designed for packaging lines with high diversity of products. The process operator easily adds new articles to the database where for each article the desired inspection method with associated criteria can be selected. In addition, dynamic inspection is possible when linked to the product planning system. This allows elements such as track-and-trace information or expiration date to be checked.

The Sealscout and Labelscout are easy to set up for different items and can be retro-fit into existing packaging lines. "We supply the machine vision inspection systems turn-key, i.e. including cameras, stainless steel control panel with 17" touch screen, mounting hardware, trigger sensor, inspection software, installation and training," concluded Jeroen Keunen.
