Heat image seal inspection for a breakthrough on Thermofoam packaging

Our client is an innovator in packaging and has developed a container that uses gravity rather than absorbent material to remove liquids from packs of meat and fish. All liquid from the contents drains through holes in the center of the container into a sealed external reservoir, which ensures that the contents, whether meat or fish, do not remain in their own juices for days. In addition, the lack of an absorbent pad removes any risk of cross-contamination and the packaging is much more recyclable.

Vision Partners provided a customer-specific machine vison inspection system that can measure the heat profile of the thermal seal of the reservoir. It is very important to the customer that there is assurance that no tray is leaking. The thermal image inspection system must be able to pick out any flaw. So reliability is very important.

The seal inspection checks various aspects of the thermal sealing process:

  • Detecting when the seal is not fully contiguous
  • Detecting shifted film
  • Detecting when no film is present
  • It compares the average temperature of the seal with the reference
  • It inspects local anomalies on the seal, both too cold and too hot

The sealing solution consists of a high-resolution thermal camera placed inside the sealing machine.

Thermal image capture is triggered after which the Machine Vision software uses various algorithms to evaluate the thermal image of the reservoir film. It then communicates with the release mechanism so that the correct package, - after thermal rejection - is removed.

Thanks to this thermal seal inspection, consistent quality is delivered to the customer where the risk of a leaking reservoir is minimized.
